Group Doesn't Want Another State Budget Cut
Lawmakers are headed back to Springfield this week to hammer out a budget, and one group says it won't be complete unless their cut funding is restored. The Illinois Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Association suffered a 22 percent budget cut for Fiscal Year 2010. The group is hoping to avoid the proposed 8 percent cut for Fiscal Year 2011.

CEO Sara Howe says the cut would mean 2,500 people would be eliminated from treatment systems and 1,000 young people would not receive prevention measures. Howe says it doesn't make sense to continue to cut a program that saves the state money. She says for every dollar spent on prevention, about $10 is saved on the cost of treatment.

In the past the group has proposed a 5-cent per drink alcohol tax to recover the lost funding. Last year, a smaller alcohol increase tax was approved but all the money went into the capital plan. The legislature has not addressed the idea of another alcohol tax increase this session.
