House Approves Tax Amnesty Plan
The cash-challenged state of Illinois could collect up to $250 million with a tax amnesty program that has passed the House. If the Senate and governor agree, tax scofflaws who owe from the period between 2002 and 2009 could pay up between Oct. 1 and Nov. 8 of this year, without penalty.

State Rep. Sandy Cole (R-Grayslake) did not like the idea of a true tax cheat being favored over, for example, a business which has been struggling and attempting to cooperate. The bill's sponsor, State Rep. Barbara Flynn Currie (D-Chicago), said, "That's what an amnesty program is, and if you don't like it, you can vote no." Cole did.

State Rep. Bill Black (R-Danville) chastised the majority Democrats for bringing their own bill and ignoring a pair of similar Republican bills last year, saying the state could have had the money in hand long ago: "It's the height of stubbornness, if not, maybe, some affliction of your brain."

SB 377 has passed the House, 102-14, and goes to the Senate.
