Lawmakers Hand Quinn Defeat On Convention Bill
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois lawmakers have handed Gov. Pat Quinn a sound defeat by rejecting his veto of legislation designed to cut costs at Chicago's McCormick Place convention center.

The Senate voted 51-2 to override the governor Thursday. It became law when the House voted 93-19.

The legislation caps labor costs and let exhibitors do their own set-up instead of using convention center union workers. It also doubles the ground transportation tax charged on trips to and from the city's airports.

Quinn eliminated the tax, softened union language and argued the center should strictly follow state purchasing rules using an amendatory veto to make specific changes.

Lawmakers say a followup bill moving through the General Assembly now fixes purchasing language and other Quinn concerns.

The bill is SB28.
