| Knox County Elected Officials to Get Pay Raises |
Whoever is elected Knox County Sheriff, Treasurer, Clerk, Supervisor of Assessments, and Circuit Clerk after the November elections will be getting pay raises.
The Knox County Board Wednesday night voted 12 to 3 to extend pay raises for those positions -- a vote that had to be taken one way or the other no later than 180 days prior to their terms beginning following the November election according to the State Constitution.
Under the move, all would get raises this year of $5,000 for all positions except Sheriff, which would see a higher raise. Then, all those positions would get annual 2.5% pay raises each of the next three years.
District-Three Democrat Barbara Foster voted no, saying the fact the state isn't paying its bills is only one of the reasons why the county can't afford raises.
"There's talk of layoffs," Foster said. "I just don't see what's justified right at this moment. Maybe later, but not right now."
But District-Four Republican Wayne Saline says the state not paying its bills is exactly why the raises SHOULD be given.
"At the end of the day, the State's already cut their funding, because they get a stipend and they've cut that, so their pay has already been reduced," Saline said. "There are other counties that have already gone down this road. The only ones that actually have to be there and do their jobs are the elected officials."
The pay for Sheriff would increase to $69,000 a year under the raise, while Treasurer, County Clerk, and Circuit Clerk all would increase to $57,555. |
