Jobless Figures Improve Month-to-Month
Not as many local residents are listing themselves as unemployed with the state.

No matter what the reason may be, that's resulting in a pretty substantial drop in local unemployment according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

The state says the Galesburg-area Unemployment Rate, which they calculate by combining Knox and Warren County jobless averages, currently sits back below double-digits at 9.6% for April -- still well above the 8% of a year ago.

Knox County's unemployment for April is at 10.1%, much lower than the 11.4% of the month prior -- with about 2,600 listed as looking for work.

The City of Galesburg alone is much higher than that at 10.9%, lower than the 11.7% of the month before; in people, that translates to about 1,600 people.

Warren County's jobless average is back below double-digits at 8.1% percent, after being above 10% in March.

There, about 750 residents are unemployed.

Most other area jobless rates saw drops as well. Even Fulton County, which had an unemployment at 14% in March, saw that drop to 12.2% in April.

Illinois Department of Employment Security Director Maureen O'Donnell says the state saw its year-over-year jobless increase slow for the fourth straight month, a sign that the recession may be ending.

Jobs lost in the immediate area year-to-year were non-farm-payroll positions.
