State Official Wants You to Remember Korean War
The three years of U. S. involvement in the Korean conflict cost more than 54,000 American lives -- almost the number from Vietnam.

It's often called "the forgotten war" because it came so soon after World War II, and an oral historian from Springfield is trying to put the spotlight back on it -- and the more than 17 hundred Illinoisans who died.

Mark DePue -- who served in Korea thirty years ago -- is using his position as oral history director of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum to tell the stories of dozens of veterans. The museum's web site contains many of the men's oral histories, and the museum is also mounting a multimedia campaign over the next three years to commemorate the lost Illinoisans.
