Developer Wants to Demolish Steak House
A developer known for owning and transforming many properties along North Henderson Street in Galesburg has plans for a former restaurant.

The Galesbug Plan Commission voted 3-3 last week on a request to re-zone the site of the former Steak House at 951 North Henderson, and property next to it, from B1 Neighborhood Commercial to B2 Commercial.

The request came at the hands of developer Mike Patton. Representing Patton, local real estate agent Ed Dahl says Patton wants to tear down the restaurant and turn it into a used car lot.

Dahl says part of the reason Patton wants the change -- many businesses will need somewhere else to go in the next couple years.

"We've had a lot of people who have contacted myself and Mike that are looking for a place to establish their businesses," Dahl said. "This is because of the overpasses and things like that, that are coming into Galesburg, and a lot of these businesses are going to have to relocate. But, they don't want to relocate in a location that's not as good as they've already got."

With the exception of Aldi's at Main and Henderson Streets, City officials say the area of Henderson south of Dayton Street is mostly B1, while the area north is B2.

Because the Plan Commission cast a tie vote on the request, the request will still go before the Galesburg City Council. They'll take it up next Monday night.
