Moffitt Disappointed in Budget
A local lawmaker, to say the least, isn't happy the Illinois General Assembly has adjourned for now without truly solving the state's budget mess.

74th District State Representative Don Moffitt says lawmakers clearly failed to address the billions of dollars in deficit spending and unpaid bills the state has now.

Moffitt tells WGIL as you can expect, there's a lot of people that were relying on the budget being balanced but instead will have to suffer through an estimated four-billion dollar deficit.

"We've got schools that haven't been paid. We've got vendors, we've got providers, we've got social service agencies that, maybe, the state owes them half their annual budget," Moffitt said. "That's simply not good public policy. That has to be reversed. It can only be reversed by...reducing the spending, then work on ways to come up with more revenue."

And that more revenue, the Gilson Republican says, should only be used to fund existing programs and not create new ones.

Moffitt, while not a proponent of borrowing to meet the state's pension obligations, says he was disappointed to hear that the Illinois Senate didn't take up that measure, since he felt every proposal needed to be at least considered in the open.
