IL Farmers Planting Soybeans Early This Year
PEORIA, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois farmers are taking advantage of this spring's dry weather to get their soybeans into the ground early.

Patrick Kirchhofer is manager of the Peoria County Farm Bureau. He says farmers are way ahead of where they've been the last two years, when rains delayed planting.

According to the state's weekly crop report, soybeans are 11 percent planted, compared with the five-year average of 4 percent for this time of year.

Farmers say having the crops planted earlier means they can manage them better. Some have upgraded their equipment so that they can plant faster.

The dry weather has also meant that corn has been planted earlier. The crop report says 87 percent of the corn crop has been planted, compared with 5 percent at this time last year.
