Galesburg City Council Wants Change to Proposed Property Sale
The Galesburg City Council is backtracking on what were plans to potentially sell some land around the former Regency Hotel.

Aldermen decided during a work session Tuesday night to sell the property the city took ownership of four years ago around the Regency and next to the Galesburg Recreation Division in one swath.

The city had wanted to divide the parcel into three parts, keeping one for any potential expansion of the recreation complex.

But aldermen, without knowing a specific potential cost, balked at that idea.

The decision came as a developer reportedly wants to tear down the long-dilapidated Regency and build new there. Sixth Ward Alderman Wayne Allen has claimed at least five aldermen are aware of that deal, while Third Ward Alderman Russell Fleming claims he must be one of the two who don't, and isn't happy about it.

The city is expected to have a formal proposal before alderman either later this month or early next month.

Tuesday night's work session wasn't televised, and an audio feed of the meeting was virtually unusable.
