Dogs Killed After Finding Rabid Bat
GALESBURG, Ill. (AP) -- A local veterinarian euthanized two family pets after the dogs chewed on a dead bat that proved to be rabid.

Dr. Greg Weech is the rabies administrator for Knox County. He says the bat found Monday in a Galesburg home's back yard is the first rabies case in the county that he can remember.

Weech says the dogs were euthanized Wednesda. The English mastiff and a German shepherd were found chewing on the bat in their owner's back yard Monday afternoon.

Weech says the dogs were put to sleep because they hadn't had their rabies shots.
