National Day of Prayer Thursday
FIRST REPORTED 3:00pm 5/5/10 A local pastor says he thinks some controversy surrounding an annual event that area ministers will be taking part in Thursday actually could work in the event's favor.

Pastor Leigh Nygard is helping the Galesburg Ministerial Association with the local observance of the "National Day of Prayer" with a community-wide prayer service at noon at the First United Methodist Church near downtown Galesburg.

A U.S. District Judge in Wisconsin last month ruled in favor of an atheist organization that the National Day of Prayer is Unconstitutional. And Nygard tells WGIL at least one organization thinks the ruling strengthened the event.

"Tony Perkins, president of the American Family Research Council, says...'Contrary to the judge's opinion, this does not promote freedom; it crushes it. Americans pray voluntarily, and exercising that right together as a willing nation is exactly what the founding fathers intended.'"

Nygard says this year, local clergy will be praying for a number of areas -- government, the church, the military, the family, education, the media, and for business.

The service will last for about an hour, and it's open to the public.
