Lawmakers, Without a Budget, Take the Weekend Off
State lawmakers expect to be home for the summer starting next weekend, and you'd think the gnarled state budget was close to complete. But while lawmakers are taking the weekend off, there's no sign that the budget will slide into law.

The legislature's adjournment is scheduled for Friday, May 7. Democrats say the budget may have to rely on borrowed money, at least for the first half of the next fiscal year. They say that since Gov. Pat Quinn's income tax hike plan has virtually no support, lawmakers may have to pass a combination of borrowing and cuts.

Republicans are critical of any borrowing idea. They think it only makes the problem worse because the interest will have to be paid later. The GOP also charges that they're being left out of any budget talks, with meetings held only between Quinn, House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) and Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago).
