U of I Agrees to Buyouts With More Than 600
URBANA, Ill. (AP) -- The University of Illinois' flagship campus has agreed to buyouts with more than 600 employees that it says will save about $25 million.

The Urbana-Champaign campus offered buyouts earlier this year. Of the 788 employees who applied, buyouts were accepted for 153 faculty and 483 other employees.

Campus spokeswoman Robin Kaler says the campus plans to hire lower-paid workers to fill 289 of the jobs.

People who took buyouts will be paid six months' salary or $75,000, whichever is less.

The university made the buyout offers as it looked for ways to save money to deal with dwindling state support and a backlog of overdue payments from the state.
