Letter Carriers Food Drive is Saturday
Local postal carriers will once again be making some pickups along with their deliveries Saturday, but it's for what has become a very critical cause in recent years.

The National Association of Letter Carriers is holding their annual "Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive across the country Saturday. Toni Ball with Local 88 says once again, mail men and women along with some Knox College students will collect non-perishable food that will then be given to the Fish Food Pantry in Galesburg.

And Ball tells WGIL at the risk of sounding like a broken record, a lot of help is needed from the community.

"The need, as I say ever year, is greater than you could ever imagine," Ball said. "When I was out at the food pantry, it's pretty bare. And it's sad to see that."

Ball tells WGIL the number of people continuing to use the Fish Food Pantry remains on the rise.

"In 2009, they helped over 13,000 people, which is just astronomical," Ball said. "We met in April, to start getting everything set up for this. In March of 2010, they served 1,300 people alone."

Ball says Local 88 also covers letter carriers in Knoxville, Kewanee, and Wyoming. All food collected there will go to their respective local food pantries.

She says you can either leave your non-perishables next to your mailbox, or when you see a truck pull up to your house along with a letter carrier, bring those items out.
