Local Nurses Honored
A nurse who herself is honored with a statue on the Knox County Courthouse lawn was a backdrop for a ceremony honoring those who carry on her profession.

Nurses -- many of whom graduated from the old Cottage Hospital School of Nursing -- gathered at the Mother Bickerdyke statue Saturday for a National Nurses Day ceremony.

State Representative Don Moffitt, whose daughter Amanda is a nurse, spoke to the crowd and says he appreciates them.

"That you for what you have done or are doing 24/7," Moffitt said. "An event like this is a message to our nurses. First, it's thanks -- thanks for what you do, and that you're appreciated. You are true professionals."

One local nurse says those in her profession just aren't honored enough.

"We are on the health care front 24/7,' said Joanie Larson, who's been a nurse for 49 years. "I just don't think there is enough said that we appreciate what nurses do, and not so many thank you's. We could do better."

Participants laid white roses at the foot of the Mother Bickerdyke statue honoring loved ones who have served the nursing profession. And one Carl Sandburg College student was awarded a nursing scholarship.

They all say nursing can often be a thankless job, but rewarding when you consider all the lives saved.
