Losing Candidate Dan Seals Appointed to State Job
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has hired a three-time losing congressional candidate to be assistant director of the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Democrat Dan Seals is expected to assume the $121,100-a-year position on Tuesday.

Seals ran twice against then-Rep. Mark Kirk and lost. After Kirk, who held the seat for five terms, decided to run for U.S. Senate in 2010, Seals ran for the 10th Congressional District seat north of Chicago and lost again, this time to Republican Robert Dold of Kenilworth.

Seals quit a job with GE's commercial mortgage unit when he ran in 2006.

The son of a former Chicago Bears player, Seals taught abroad and speaks Japanese. He holds an MBA from the University of Chicago.

The Illinois Senate, controlled by Democrats, must confirm Seals' appointment.
