Man Drives Over Unfinished Bridge Near Ellisville
Bridge repair work continues after a major accident set things back on County Highway 17 near Ellisville.

According to a new release from the Fulton County Sheriff's Department, a man drove across an unfinished bridge over the Spoon River Saturday evening.

52 year old Fred McKown of Ellisville was driving west bound on Highway 17 when he came upon the bridge still under construction. McKown allegedly struck a parked motorcycle and drove through an eight foot barricade onto the unfinished bridge.

According to the report, the motorcycle fell to the ground about 25 feet below and the truck became airborne landing on an I-beam and continuing for about another 100 feet.

McKown then existed the truck and also fell to the rocks below. He was airlifted to a Peoria hospital where his condition in not known at this time.

Police say he was ticketed for failure to obey a traffic control device, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and for driving under the influence of alcohol.

It's not clear how much damage was done to the bridge nor the cost of the repairs.
