Quiet Zone Costs More Affordable Than a Year Ago
Bringing quiet zones to Galesburg may be much cheaper than what Galesburg City Council members expected.

"The circuitry upgrades are $440,000, the supplemental safety measures and end of road treatments for the crossing closures are estimated at $1 million 55[thousand], it could be less than that particularly if we do some of the work in house with the medians ourself," said City Engineer Wayne Carl. "So total estimated cost would be almost $1.5 million , and as I showed you incentives are $1.345[million] so the amount needed by the city would be approximately $150,000."

Carl gave a presentation to council member Monday during a special work session.

Around this time last year, the estimated cost of quiet zones with eight crossing closures would have been about $2.5 million.

Carl says now crossing closure incentives are being offered by the Illinois Department of Transportation, BNSF, and the Illinois Commerce Commission.

Council members all agreed the quiet zones are a good thing for the city but each may reservations with individual crossing closures.

All members also agreed, however, that taxing those most impacted by the train noise to pay for the quiet zone was not an option, and simple budget maneuvering may be able to pay for the 150-thousand dollar price tag.
