U of IL Appeals Privacy Ruling
CHICAGO (AP) -- The University of Illinois has appealed a court decision that found the school was wrong to use a federal privacy law to withhold the names of college applicants involved in an admissions scandal.

The university filed its appeal Tuesday with the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago.

The Chicago Tribune sued the university to get the names. A federal judge ruled March 9 that the federal Family Education Rights and Privacy Act doesn't require that students' names be withheld.

The university says the judge's ruling would force it to break that law and runs counter to other related decisions.

The 2009 Category I scandal over the admission of well-connected, under-qualified students cost President B. Joseph White his job and led to resignations from most university trustees.
