Board Votes to Close Only East St. Louis Hospital
JOLIET, Ill. (AP) -- A state board has approved the closure of the only hospital in East St. Louis.

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board voted Tuesday to allow the closure of Kenneth Hall Regional Hospital.

Larry McCulley, CEO of the foundation that runs the hospital, says it will take several months to close the charity hospital and open an urgent care center nearby. The Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation plans to move some of the psychiatric beds to a sister hospital in Centreville.

The East St. Louis hospital in recent years had been reduced to 39 mental health beds and an emergency room that no longer accepted trauma patients. It has been losing $5 million a year.

The foundation plans to convert the hospital building to a mixed-use facility.
