Chicago Politics Becomes Focus in Retrial
(IRN)-Testimony in the retrial of former Governor Rod Blagojevich turns to talk of Chicago politics.

In a phone conversation between Blagojevich and his former deputy governor turned consultant, Doug Scofield relays a message to Blagojevich about an appointment the former governor was chasing. The message: the President-elect wanted to get away from Chicago politics. In previous phone conversations secretly recorded by the FBI, Blagojevich expresses his desire to be appointed secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Scofield was relaying messages for Service Employees International Union president Tom Balanoff who had talked with President-elect Barack Obama. Obama expressed his desire to see Valarie Jarrett appointed to the U.S. Senate.

At the end of testimony Tuesday, jurors heard of the Blagojevich family's money woes. Prosecutors summed up the household expenses. As was the case in the last trial, the government emphasized that the family spent $400,000 on clothing from 2002 to 2008.
