Lincoln Advocacy Group Restarts After 100 Years
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- An Abraham Lincoln advocacy group will restart after more than 100 years of inactivity to promote events and celebrations for the nation's 16th President.

The Lincoln Monument Association stopped operating in 1895. That was 21 years after the dedication of Lincoln's Tomb in Springfield, where the Great Emancipator and his family rest today.

The state of Illinois controls all state Lincoln sites but lacks money to do more than maintain those landmarks. The not-for-profit association plans to raise funds to pay for Lincoln-related special events.

Springfield Mayor Mike Houston is the association's first honorary member. The group says it was important to include the city's top executive so it could potentially collaborate with Springfield for special events.
