Former Gym Teacher Sentenced for Abuse of Student
CHICAGO (AP) -- A former gym teacher at a Chicago Catholic high school received a 24-month probation sentence after pleading guilty to sexually abusing a former student.

Wesley Cherniak pleaded guilty Tuesday to aggravated criminal sexual abuse before Cook County Circuit Judge Mary Margaret Brosnahan.

According to state's attorney spokesman Andy Conklin, the 33-year-old Cherniak must undergo sexual offender probation and must register as a convicted sex offender.

Prosecutors alleged that Cherniak, who taught at St. Benedict's High School, and the victim, 17 at the time, met once a week between February and May 2009 at motels, his car and once in her bedroom to have sex.

After the victim told her parents about the liaisons, police obtained DNA evidence, telephone and motel records that led to charges against Cherniak.
