Mayors Tell State to Keep Hands Off Tax Dollars
CHICAGO (AP) -- More than 20 Illinois mayors will protest the state government's attempt to keep locally generated tax revenue for its own coffers rather than redistributing it to communities.

The mayors scheduled a news conference Thursday at the Thompson Center in Chicago to discuss what they call a ``hijack'' of money designated for local governments. A confidential memo from Gov. Pat Quinn's office last month mentioned keeping about $1 billion from local governments' portion of state income tax revenue.

Local government officials say they already have made sacrifices by raising taxes, slashing services and cutting staff. They say state government has failed to make equal sacrifices. They say local governments would be unfairly burdened if the state keeps the income tax revenue.
