New Principal in Abingdon School District
The Abingdon School District now officially has all its administrators in place for the coming school year.

The District 217 board last night voted to hire Jay Hurder as the new principal for both the Middle and High Schools next school year, replacing Stan Adcock and Chad Cox. The school board decided to combine the two positions as a budget-saving measure.

Hurder is a native of the Freeport area. The Western Illinois University graduate has also taught in the Freeport, Rockford, and Dixon areas, as well as in the state of Montana, and tells WGIL he was looking to come back to an area like Abingdon.

"Small town... I think I'm kind of tired of the big cooperated school district environment. My grandparents, they're in Brimfield, I went to school in Macomb in a small school district. One of the things that brought me here was that I looked around for schools that aren't necessarily in school improvement right now."

Hurder refers to the School Improvement Plan districts have to file and follow if they're found not to be meeting the standards set in the federal No Child Left Behind law.

While the cut in administrations was budget-related, Hurder says he'd like to see a Dean of Students hired for the Middle/High School so he'll have a little extra help.

Hurder joins new Superintendent David Black in officially starting July first.
