Mosquitoes From Floods Likely Don't Carry Disease
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Rain and flooding in southern Illinois have made conditions ideal for mosquitoes. But Illinois officials say it's likely they won't be infected with West Nile Virus.

Species of mosquitoes bred by floodwater typically appear about two weeks after heavy rain and flooding.

But Illinois Department of Public Health officials say a different species of mosquito will appear as floodwater recedes and leaves behind stagnant water in ditches and catch basins.

This so-called ``house mosquito'' can carry West Nile Virus. The virus can cause illness and even death in humans.

Thirty of the state's 102 counties reported West Nile in animals or humans last summer.
