Flood Damage Tolling Under Way in Southern Illinois
CAIRO, Ill. (AP) -- Federal and Illinois emergency-management officials have started assessing flood damage tied to the Mississippi, Ohio and other rivers in recent weeks in the southern part of the state.

The documentation of damage comes as the Ohio River continues receding, having threatened Cairo and swamped parts of Metropolis upriver.

The damage assessments in about a dozen counties will be used by the state to support a request for federal assistance. The assistance would help property owners affected by flooding along the Mississippi, Ohio, Wabash and other rivers.

The Ohio River's retreat meant that a U.S. highway bridge linking Cairo to Kentucky has reopened, and a curfew in Cairo was lifted Monday.
