City Council to Consider Quiet Zone Documents
The City of Galesburg is ready to forge ahead with efforts to silence train whistles at various locations in town.

The Galesburg City Council Monday night will consider allowing the city administration to draw up documents that would lead to the closure of a number of rail crossings in town, in support of the city's bid to get federal "Quiet Zone" status along parts of the Chillicothe and Mendota sub-divisions.

The plan that's been years in the making could eventually cost the city millions, but most of that will be made up with state, federal, and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Funding.

Targeted for closure are crossings located at West, Kellogg, North, Pearl, Whitesboro, and Chambers Street.

The city council is being asked to pass a resolution allowing the paperwork to be crafted.

Aldermen Monday will also not take action on it, but they will see the proposed ward redistricting maps made necessary with the 2010 Census.

They'll also consider allowing whatever money that's won by the city in the Readers Digest "We Hear You, America" contest to be given to the Galesburg Community Foundation, so that a fund can be established which will dole out the money over time to local community and youth programs.

The Galesburg City Council meets at 6:30pm Monday.
