DePaul Students to Vote on Ousting Hummus Brand
CHICAGO (AP) -- When DePaul University students vote this week on annual officer elections, they will also be asked whether the hummus brand served on campus should be replaced.

Pushing the referendum is Students for Justice in Palestine, which points out the owner of Sabra, maker of the hummus served at the school, is the Strauss Group. They contend the company gives financial support to two Israeli military units accused of human rights abuses.

The student group's spokesman, Trent Carl, tells the Chicago Sun-Times reaction on campus to the referendum runs from very supportive to indifferent to irate.

New York-based Sabra is a leading seller of hummus. Its parent is Israel's second-largest food and beverage company, with interests worldwide.

DePaul spokeswoman Robin Florzak says the referendum's outcome not binding on the university.
