Doctor Groups Issue Warning About Dog Bite Dangers
CHICAGO (AP) -- The American Academy of Pediatrics is joining forces to raise awareness about the dangers of dog bites.

To mark National Dog Bite Prevention Week, four doctor groups point out that almost 5 million people are bitten by dogs every year. And an estimated 600,000 children require medical attention for dog bites.

The message comes from the academy, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery -- two other Chicago-area groups. The Massachusetts-based American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons is the fourth group spreading the message.

Their tips include urging parents to teach kids to ask dog owners for permission before petting any dog. Also, the groups say when threatened by a dog, remain calm and avoid eye contact.
