Bloomington Zoo Welcomes New, Rare Red Wolf Pups
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) -- Additions to the population of a rare wolf breed are starting to become a regular part of summer at a zoo in Bloomington.

Miller Park Zoo Superintendent Jay Tetzloff says one of the zoo's red wolves gave birth to four female pups over the weekend. The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports it's the second straight year in which one of the zoo's red wolves has given birth to four pups.

Last weekend, two of the pups from 2010 were released into the wild in North Carolina as part of efforts to restore the species.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service says about 120 red wolves live in the wild. All are in North Carolina. The red wolf was once the dominant predator in the southeastern United States.
