Knoxville Weighs Pros and Cons of GREDA Membership
Knoxville's top elected official says he's not sure what the city will do with its now-expired membership in the Galesburg Regional Economic Development Association.

GREDA president and Knoxville resident Tom Schmidt urged the city council this week to renew its $5,000 membership in GREDA, but Mayor Terry Pool says aldermen have some serious thinking to do in that regard: renew the membership, hire a local economic development director, or both.

Pool tells WGIL he could see it both ways.

"Looking at the whole area is also good but we also need a grocery store, that's one of our main focuses is to try an get a grocery store back in town so at this point it might be advantageous to have both, I don't know, we have a committee looking into it so we'll know more in a couple of months."

Pool says, though, on the one hand, the city could spend five grand on GREDA, or spend a full-time salary on a potential full-time position.

Galva and Carthage are the only other cities that are members of GREDA after Galesburg dropped out a couple years ago.

The Knoxville City Council this week did approve appointing alderman Bernadine Fleisher as mayor pro tem should Pool not be available, and they approved seeking bids on the proposed $1 million of work related to the city's Waste Water Treatment Plant, most of which would be paid for with an EPA loan the city is applying for.
