Council Tables Redistricting Map Proposal
FIRST REPORTED 3pm 5/18/11 Population, registered voters, and votes cast, all are taken into consideration when creating legislative district maps.

The Galesburg Election Commission is proposing reducing precincts in the city partly as a cost saving measure, but Seventh Ward Alderman Jeremy Karlin isn't sure they've generated the best map yet.

"Well I am also concerned about the voters in my precinct as well believe it or not, as a politician," he said, "and a person in my ward for example, their vote is, under this formula, worth less than one in the fourth."

Election Commissioner Bill Butts, however, says it's all based on past practices of Galesburg voters.

"We do not feel that it's going to dilute the quality of the election process at all." he said. "For example, and I don't want to go into too much detail, but at this last election we had one precinct in which there was only two people came to the poles. So we need to look at that and we need to look at it from a historical perspective as far as who is coming to the poles and how many people are voting and I think that was the idea behind it."

Most alderman had one issue or another with the proposed map at Monday's city council meeting, and although the measure was on first reading, it was tabled and could be brought back for discussion this summer.
