FOID Card Legislation Advancing through Legislature
(IRN)-A proposal to keep private the names of millions of firearm owners in Illinois is still moving through the legislature with little opposition.

The measure would amend the state's Freedom of Information Act to exempt the names of those who carry a firearm owners' ID card. State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale) heralds the legislation as a common sense measure.

"I do not understand for the life of me why we would give a map to allow criminals to systematically pick and choose and burglarize our homes or farms," says Dillard.

Dillard says addresses would not be included with the FOID card names database, but argues it wouldn't be hard to look them up once names are obtained. He says it would also be easy to determine which households don't hold FOID cards.

Dillard says the names of FOID card holders are law enforcement records, not public records. He says the public doesn't have the right to invade peoples' privacy and jeopardize their safety, even though the FOID card process is overseen by a taxpayer funded entity: the Illinois State Police.
