Abuse, Neglect Alarming in Illinois Group Homes
CHICAGO (AP) -- More than 130 cases of abuse and neglect were investigated and confirmed in Illinois group homes for adults last year, a 33 percent increase over 2006.

Documents obtained by The Associated Press illustrate a mostly overlooked problem in Illinois. The reports show mistreatment and outright cruelty perpetrated by low-wage workers with scant supervision.

One group home worker viciously cursed the disabled adults in her care when they didn't wash dishes to her satisfaction. Another dragged a disabled man by his ankles as he screamed in pain.

The cases reinforce concerns about the treatment of residents at group homes just as the alleged beating death of a developmentally disabled man in eastern Illinois has led to proposed legislation that would tighten state oversight of group homes.
