Quinn Unhappy with Legislature's Progress
(IRN)-There's just over a week to go in the General Assembly, and Governor Pat Quinn is not happy with what's happening.

The governor proposed increasing education funding by $225 million. The Illinois House is cutting education by $200 million.

"I'm not happy with members of the General Assembly who think you can cut special education. This is just plain wrong," Quinn said. "There are those who think you can cut early childhood education. I don't think that's right. And I definitely don't think it's right to be cutting the funding for boys and girls going to kindergarten through 12th grade."

The state of course is billions in the red and has to cut somewhere, but Quinn says with economic recovery under way, state revenues are on the rise, and the increase should be invested in schools.

The House and Senate have both passed budgets, but they're different, so they will have to be reconciled. In total, the Senate budget is about $1 billion smaller than the governor's proposal, and the House budget is $2 billion smaller.

May 31 is the deadline to pass legislation with a simple majority.
