Emerald Ash Borer Remains a Concern
(IRN)-The effort continues to thwart the spread of the emerald ash borer.

The destructive beetle which kills ash trees was discovered in Illinois in 2006, and 25 counties across the northern part of the state are in quarantine, meaning it's illegal to move firewood in or out of the quarantine area, says USDA entomologist David Lance.

"The larvae of the beetle live under the bark of ash trees," he says. "They're small beetles, and you can get a lot of them in a fairly small number of logs, enough certainly to provide a new infestation if you take the logs out, say, to a campground, or if you're out camping and bring the longs home."

So you're supposed to buy your firewood where you burn it and burn it where you buy it.

The USDA is trying to control the beetles using wasps imported from China. They don't sting, and they're being tested to determine if they will have any unintended consequences on the ecosystem here. There have been a few releases in Illinois of these wasps, which go right for the emerald ash borer eggs.

Purple traps are set up this year too to determine the presence of the emerald ash borer. You're supposed to leave them alone.
