Ag Expert Optimistic on Crops
A local agronomist says he's quite bullish on the state of local corn and soybean crops these days.

Lance Tarchione says both crops are in pretty good shape right now, with virtually all the corn in and about two-thirds of the soybeans, and he says that even goes for corn acres that had to be re-planted due to bad weather early in the season.

Tarchione tells the WGIL Mid-Day that re-planting really could have taken a toll on farmers.

"It does kind of make you wonder, 'Well, what did I do wrong,' or 'What could I have done better,' so there is a pride factor there. I know guys that have farmed in Knox County for decades that have never had to replant corn the way we this year. This was kind of an exceptional year as far as that goes."

There's obviously a cost to re-planting, but Tarchione says you can sometimes expect that yields will be lower in re-planted fields.

But he says all the fields he's seen are in pretty good shape, and have a lot of emergence with good stalk stands.
