IL Committee Approves Immigrant Scholarship Bill
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- A bill that would establish a privately-funded college scholarship for children of immigrants is headed to the floor of the Illinois House.

The measure would allow immigrant children, whether legal or illegal, to apply for funds. It also would allow illegal immigrants to invest in the state's college savings program. Only students who currently work and are already enrolled in college may apply.

The bill, approved by the Senate, passed a House committee in a 7-4 vote. It has passed the Senate.

Supporters say it would offer immigrants a better future, contending illegal immigrant students should not be punished because many did not have a choice when their parents immigrated.
Opponents say the bill could help lure illegal immigrants to Illinois.
