New Dean of Students for Abingdon High School
The administrative team for the coming year is now set in the Abingdon School District.

The District 217 board during a special meeting last night approved promoting art teacher and athletic director Joe Nichols to dean of students at Abingdon Middle and High Schools in the coming school year.

The District is eliminating one principal position and adding the dean position as part of cost-saving measures. Outgoing superintendent Tami Roskamp tells WGIL she believes having such a person in place is good.

"I think for this transitional time right now with students going from middle school to high school, going to one combined office, that this deans position is key for discipline. With the high school principle they'll be able to focus more on curriculum and instruction, get to know the people, and the dean will be able to focus on students."

And Roskamp says with a new but unknown superintendent in David Black, and a new-but-unknown principal in Jay Hurder, having someone familiar like Nichols in the dean position will be another benefit for students.

Salary information wasn't available. Roskamp says Nichols will continue to be athletic director in addition to being dean.
