General Assembly Gives Go Ahead for Murderer List
(IRN)-You've heard of a sex offender registry, but what about a murder registry? Illinois lawmakers have approved such a list, which will be the first of its kind in the country.

State Senator John Millner (R-Carol Stream) says neighbors deserve to know if an accused killer is living within their midst. Millner, the bill's sponsor, says this version is different than what passed the other chamber several weeks ago.

"What we did in my amendment was to move it into the sex offender registry so it won't cost the state police any more money, we'd be able to use their registry with minor tweaks," he says.

The registry, which would be created immediately upon the governor's signature of HB 263, would require anyone serving a prison sentence for first degree murder to register immediately upon release.

They'd be on the list for ten years, unless they're charged with murdering after a sexual assault or murdering a child. Then they're on it for life. The House must now agree to the Senate's changes before it goes to the governor.
