Workers' Comp Reforms or End to the System Altogether
(IRN)-Barring an agreement to reform Illinois' workers' compensation system, the alternative may be to simply blow it up. A House committee has passed a bill to do that, placing worker injury claims in the courts.

Is it a stunt to force negotiators' hands? "I've been accused of using tactics in the past," says the sponsor, State Representative John Bradley (D-Marion). "I passed a bill a few years ago to repeal the Riverboat Gambling Act. Everybody thought that was a stunt. And they thought our antics were stunts when we took on the utility companies until we got $1 billion out of them. So, generally, when I do something like this, I'm serious."

Business groups have said Illinois has the worst, costliest, least accountable workers' compensation system in the country. This year has seen talk of Illinois-based companies such as Caterpillar possibly escaping the conditions.

Bradley says if nothing else, there is an alternative which is ready to pass the state House.

SB 1933 has passed the House Executive Committee.
