IL Cemetery Visitors Urged to Watch for Thefts
CHICAGO (AP) -- Many Illinoisans traditionally visit loved ones' grave sites over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart and Catholic Cemeteries are joining this year to increase awareness of crimes that can happen at Illinois cemeteries. The sheriff's office says over six weeks last summer Catholic Cemeteries saw 15 thefts from vehicles while visitors were at graves.

Officials say the thefts happened at unlocked vehicles with valuables left exposed. Police also have investigated metal thefts of sewer covers, vases and memorials from cemeteries.

Sheriff Dart urges cemetery visitors to lock their cars and take their keys with them and take purses or wallets to grave sites. Police say visitors shouldn't leave valuables in plain view in cars. Police urge visitors to report anything suspicious to authorities.
