A Day Full of Storms
Heavy thunderstorms pounded Galesburg seemingly day and night Wednesday.

Wednesday started with heavy thunderstorms that could have triggered power outages in the northern section of Galesburg. As many as 1500 Ameren customers were without power at one point Wednesday during an outage that lasted upwards of two hours.

Ameren says, however, they won't know for sure if the blown transformer at their North Seminary Street station was indeed caused by the weather until they can do some tests once the weather improves.

Then, by Wednesday afternoon, storms fired up again. These caused standing water on many area roadways. The National Weather Service says the water was a foot-and-a-half deep in some parts of Henry, Knox, and Warren Counties.

Some areas received as much as three inches of rain Wednesday.

Storm spotters told the Weather Service that hail as large as quarter-size was reported in various parts of the area.

And, in Knox County, in at least three different sections, wind gusts as high as 60-plus miles per hour were clocked.

Damage could be seen, for example, at Costa Catholic Academy, where a playground was all but destroyed, and at the Galesburg Lowe's, where a shed toppled onto a car.

The area saw tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings Wednesday. There are no injuries. And rain continues in the forecast the next couple days.
