Cullerton: Pension Cut Doesn't Stand Chance in Senate
(IRN)-Illinois has under-funded its public employee pension systems over the past few decades by billions, but a proposal to cut the state's contribution to that system might not stand a chance in the Senate.

The measure would force state employees to pay double, or in some cases triple what they currently pay to receive the same benefits. Employees would also be given the option to pay the same amount, but receive fewer benefits. Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) says the current proposal is unconstitutional.

"You know, I'm not on the Supreme Court, but I'm telling you, I'm very certain how I think the Court will rule," says Cullerton. "If people want to vote for it, they're welcome to it, I'll give people the opportunity to do so. But I'm not going to vote for it because it's unconstitutional."

Cullerton says benefits cannot be cut once workers buy into the pension system. He does, however, support the measure passed two years ago that lowered benefits for new employees. He also suggests some retirees buy their state health care based on a sliding scale and ability to pay.

The measure is S.B. 517 and has passed a House committee.
