| Senate Releases Congressional Maps |
(IRN)-A new congressional map was unveiled Friday by Illinois Senate Democrats.
Census data provided that Illinois lose a congressional seat this year, so only 18 districts are in the congressional map versus the 19 previous congressional seats.
U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) says the new congressional map is intended to uproot the victories by Republicans from the 2010 election. "This is a plan to defeat fiscal conservatives, to have people that would vote for more spending, more borrowing, and more taxing, exactly the decision that last November a majority of voters decided not to have," said Kirk.
U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) says he's been through this process, and he knows how important the first re-election is for new congressmen. "The first re-elect for a brand new congressman is the toughest election, and the first re-elect for many of these new Republican congressmen is a new map. So it's understandable that people think there could be change," said Durbin. "To say that they're not political is in most cases naïve. They are political."
Kirk says communities are divided, though Springfield is actually divided less under this map than under the current map.
"It divides up Congresswoman Judy Biggert's DuPage district five separate ways. The poor town of Downers Grove is divided three separate ways. Madison County, also three separate ways, Springfield: divided."
The congressional map still must be voted on by the Illinois House and Senate before heading to the governor.
