Illinois Offers Online Beach Water Quality Data
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The Illinois Department of Public Health is reminding residents to check online water-quality data before heading to beaches across the state this summer.

The public health website provides information about public and private beaches. It includes water-quality test results; advisories; and histories about when beaches were closed, for how long and why.

The department licenses all swim beaches in Illinois except for those on Lake Michigan. Municipal governments operating Lake Michigan beaches perform water testing and provide notification in compliance with federal law.

Swimmers can reduce their risk of illnesses by not swimming after heavy rains, avoiding storm drains that drain water from streets and watching out for other signs of pollution such as oil slicks on water.
