Ag Official Concerned About Flooded Fields
A local agronomist says he hoped for a little rain for farm fields this week, but this is ridiculous.

A number of local fields have at least some ponding in them, while others have a lot. And Lance Tarchione says if those fields don't dry out soon, that could seriously hamper plant growth since it's so early in the growing season and plants are just now starting to emerge.

Tarchione tells WGIL there is a small albeit slightly-expensive silver lining.

"It's early enough in the season if you've got large areas that pound out or drown out, it is early enough to replant something into those areas, so if you've got enough acres affected and obviously there's a lot of Spoon River bottoms that are under several feet of water from the river, there'll definitely some replanting of river bottoms."

Tarchione says some re-planting is also likely in fields that, for example, have ponds around 10 acres or so that don't have a drainage problem.

Lower yields will also be a concern, Tarchione says, from here on out.
