'Age Appropriate' Sex Ed Plan Fails in IL Senate
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Legislation emphasizing contraception along with abstinence in sex education has failed in the Illinois Senate.

The measure fell one vote short in a 29-26 count Tuesday.

Senator Heather Steans of Chicago says students need to hear about condoms to prevent sexually transmitted diseases.

The Democrat's legislation would teach contraception in preventing pregnancy and disease, while still stressing that abstaining is the only sure way.

Conservative groups protested the measure's provision that information be both age-appropriate and ``medically accurate.'' They say schools are not the place to discuss pre-marital sex.

Schools would not be forced to offer sex education. Steans held the failed legislation back for another vote.
